Royal Field Artillery
First World War Diary with Anecdotes

The diary and anecdotes of John Price Nunn who was a Driver and Signaller for the 2nd East Lancashire Division.

Introduction

This is my Grandfather’s personal record of his time in the First World War. To produce this he transcribed the diary notes he made during the war. In addition to the day to day activities he also elaborated on events that had taken place in a series of anecdotes. These were interspersed in his physical diary but for the purpose of having on the web these have been placed in a separate section.

Born May 5th 1897 he was 19 years old when this diary starts on Feb 22nd 1917.

He was in the 2nd East Lancs Division Royal Field Artillery, 331 Brigade, C Battery. He was initially a Driver whose main job was to supply ammunition to the lines, then later on his role changed to Signaller. He wrote about various phases of his life as record to leave his family. I was asked by my father if I would type up what I could; so that it would be easier to read, and started with his war diary. After completing this, and after consulting both my Father and Uncle with respect to how my Grandfather would have felt, we agreed that there may be stories and events of interest to more than the family, and that he would not have minded it being available to a wider public.

Disclaimer: In typing up the diary it was not possible to read all words and a 'best guess' was often used. These include general words, people's names and place names. My Grandfather tells many stories about people from his time in the war. The views and stories expressed are his own and unsubstantiated. There may be errors in his memory, names and to the recording of events and dates. There may also be errors from typing up his diaries.
